Welcome to the Nightingale Macmillan Unit

Royal Derby Hospital, Uttoxeter Road, Derby, DE22 3NE

Move to the Royal Derby Hospital

In May of 2009 the Nightingale Macmillan Unit moved from it's location in London Road, Derby, to a new purpose built Unit on the site of the new super hospital, which as from 1st July, became the  Royal Derby Hospital.  The Unit name has remained as the "Nightingale Macmillan Unit" and is part of the Cancer Centre and therefore adjacent to other departments in this field.

Entry to the Nightingale Macmillan Unit is via the Cancer Centre main entrance (opposite Car Park 6) and all facilities are on the ground floor of the new building.

The new facilities provide both additional and better accommodation for those cared for by the Unit.

History of the Unit

The original Unit was opened in 1985 by HRH The Duchess of Kent, it was housed in the former maternity unit across the road from the Derbyshire Royal Infirmary which was converted with 'pump-priming' funding from the Macmillan Cancer Relief and monies raised locally.

Since its inception the Unit was  extended and expanded to form an integrated specialist palliative care service.

It offered comprehensive facilities for 15 in-patients with facilities for a further 15 patients on a day-care basis, a lymphoedema clinic plus out-patient and volunteer home sitting services and a Home Care team comprising of the consultants, the Unit's social worker and community Macmillan Nurses.

The Unit also acted as a cancer and palliative care resource centre providing information and research material as well as education and training for nursing staff.
